Friday Night Blues Jam feat. Mike Sedgewick Black Swan Tavern
The Friday Night Blues Jam is hosted by the team of singer Robin Hutchison, and guitar player, Mike Sedgewick. The origins of the jam can be traced back to 2016 at a small bar in Toronto’s Beaches area called The Peppery Cat. Within’ a few months, they began to develop a unique brand of high level musicianship, fostered an environment of friendly and welcoming community, and built a reputation as one of the best places in the East End to catch authentic blues on a Friday night. It was not uncommon during that time to catch such guitar greats as Tony Springer and Frank Cosentino stop by and tear it up for a few songs. Gradually, in a grass roots approach, they built a solid following from local music fans. Consistently delivering quality music in a casual and impromptu way.
It was in 2017 that the Peppery Cat closed operations, and the jam was moved across Queen St. East to The Salty Dog. Both venues were owned by the same family so it was an easy and logical transition. Although slightly smaller in size, the Salty Dog had a more intimate and comfortable vibe. When it was filled with music fans, the energy for both performer and audience was unparalleled. It was during this time, up until it also closed in February 2020 (unrelated to covid), that the Friday Night Blues Jam really became what it is known for today. Many of the top players from Southern Ontario regularity would occupy the featured guest spot. It was not uncommon to have Juno winners, Maples Blues winners, and up and coming stars to be featured as guest, in the house band, or just drop by to play a few or mingle with the community. Musicians such as Tom Bona, Jonny Wong, Jesse Whiteley, Joshua Miller, Ian Andrews, Julian Fauth, Steve Grisbrook, Frank Cosentino, Rob Quail, Jerome Tucker, Tony Springer, Sugar Brown, Conor Gains, George Koller, Russ Boswell, Little Magic Sam, Nick Tabarias, Paige Armstrong, Tim Gittens, Tracey Gallant, John Fraser Findlay, Dan MacKinnon, Mike Nagoda, Sons of Rhythm, Meghan Parnell, Dave Barnes, Greg Godovitz, and Sandra Bouza, to name a few. Many friendships and professional relationships were forged during this time. International visitors would show up and share their stories of how they heard about the scene that was happening.
By February of 2020, those Friday nights were standing room only, and it was difficult to move in the confines of the venue. Serendipitously, the venue had been outgrown when the Salty Dog closed, and the jam needed a new home. The perfect opportunity was at the Black Swan Tavern (154 Danforth Ave). The Black Swan Tavern was bigger, had a more central location, and most importantly has a storied history of having some of the greatest blues musicians in the world play there during the days of the Kendall-Wall Band from the 80’s and 90’s. It was clear after the inaugural Black Swan event that they had indeed found their new home. A place to grow, evolve, and continue to fill the hearts of dedicated blues fans with some of the best music and energy that Toronto has to offer.
Tyler Yarema live at the Reservoir Lounge
Since 1993, Toronto-based musician, Tyler Yarema (then twenty-one years old) has been performing at the Reservoir Lounge, soon after its official opening in downtown Toronto. The self-taught musician (pianist and vocalist) currently plays weekly on Friday and Saturday evenings, beginning at 9:30pm. Last Friday was the first show post-COVID and was received extremely well by the patrons at the Lounge; a clear relief as many locals had their first taste of live music post-pandemic.
Though, I use the term “self-taught,” Yarema would prefer the term “self-educated.” The difference being that self-taught implies learning without external sources. Self-educated is more a personal study from both the artist themselves, and other artists and teachers and resources.
Yarema has been dabbling in music since the ripe age of thirteen, where he would play guitar in jam sessions with friends. At the age of sixteen, one of his co-dabblers brought their keyboard. As soon as Yarema sat down with the keys, he knew that his life had changed. While something beyond him (one-might-say, divine source) took over, he knew he had found his calling.
Throughout his youth, he would ditch classes to play the school piano instead of studying. It didn’t take long before his mother accepted this as part of his artistic process.
Upon asking Yarema advice for other musicians, he agreed that while things differ from individual to individual, as well as place to place and time to time, it really does depend on three huge factors. The first being, the patience and time to dedicate into learning a new skill and surrendering your life to said skill. The second being the commitment to jam sessions and playing with as many different artists as possible, in as many venues, locations, and circumstances as one can manage. But the third, and arguably most important factor is something beyond you, a skill set you were given at birth. To quote, to be an artist requires something that the “good lord gave you that sets you 1,000 miles beyond your colleagues” before you even begin the learning process. Many true artists can emphasize with this factor, feeling as though they are a vessel to their art and not truly creating it externally, but it comes from something within one’s self. A drive beyond their own function.
Yarema’s main advice for fellow musicians starting out – while things are constantly changing, just keep performing. Keep doing what you love. Keep learning and keep dabbling. Also, try out open-mic nights, as you never know where one avenue might lead.
Yarema has recently been invited to join the Downchild Blues Band as the keyboardist, the first show will be during the Tim Hortons Southside Shuffle.

Late Nights at The Rex: Musings About a Unique Toronto Venue
The live music venue is known for its retro-chic décor, and of course, the infamous and by-now-beloved pillar in the middle of the dining area. It’s this unique modern-yet-historical charm that makes it so distinct – and so popular as a late-night hangout spot. For many years it’s been a central venue for the TD jazz festival. Why wouldn’t it be, given that it’s such a household name? Believe it or not, though, The Rex started out from seriously humble roots. In 1960, Bob Ross bought out the cute but unremarkable United Clothing Store and converted it into an expanded bar, which quickly attracted an audience. Around 20 years later, as Queen Street West became increasingly hip, Ross realized that he had better keep up with the times if he wanted to boast a poppin’ venue for local clientele. Initially he hosted mainly pro-alt-country and rockabilly music, genres that are scarcely recognizable today. But all that was soon to change.

In the early days of the venue, Bob Ross would shut down early, go to the nearby jazz bar Bourbon Street & Basement Street, and chillax with the musicians till the early hours of the night. Eventually they started showing up at the Rex between sets – mostly for the bargain drinks. So it was a combination of sociability and business savvy (read: cheap beer) that lay down the roots of The Rex as we know it today.
One seemingly ordinary night, Canadian saxophonist DT Thompson was playing down the street. After a set, the jazz musician strutted in casually, playing “When The Saints Go Marching In” while prancing around the bar. Eventually he found his way to the bar, and requested a rye and coke for his impromptu entertainment. Ross was seemingly more amused than anything, because from that day forward the venue has been known predominantly for its jazz and blues shows.
The bar has been renovated many times over the years, but none of the changes have modernized it so much as to take away its characteristic and unmistakable Old Toronto feel. The bar is still owned by Bob Ross, and now he has his grandson Avi around to manage it with him. Tom Tytel took over booking in the 90s, and he’s been the go-to guy ever since. The Rex may be a bar, but it seems to be equal parts a family.

As far as mottos go, The Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar prefers to keep it simple. “More Great Jazz than anywhere else, all the time!” is their commitment. They honour it very well, and especially now as we return to a world of late-night drinks and live jazz. Having just reopened, The Rex has caught the attention of many a music lover yearning for a night of musical whimsy. And they’ve prepared well for it, too: the unmistakable venue has invested in all the modern equipment necessary. Their stage boasts floor-to-ceiling glass walls to ensure a barrier between musician and audience, and they are certainly taking full advantage of the outdoor patio craze of summer 2021.
On Monday, July 26, the kicked off the week with some smooth live tunes. With Keith on the drums, Ian on the horns, and David on the bass, they were the quintessential jazz trio, perfect to sip summer cocktails along to. They met at U of T and have been making music together ever since. All three seemed thrilled to finally be back in the music scene, and their fervour was clear in their performance. In fact, I daresay their stage presence as group easily made up for the plastic barriers separating them from the audience. They have little social media presence and tend not to advertise much, claiming they really do it for the love of music. This love of music may be all the advertising they need, because we sincerely recommend you go check out the Keith Barstow group next time they play The Rex.

Kevin Garrett
Kevin Garrett is an American musician from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania based out of Brooklyn, New York. This talented young musician has already been nominated for his work on Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ album, and I have a feeling it will only be the first of many. There is something about him that makes me think of Ed Sheeran, but he has a sound that is all his. It’s rare to hear this style of music played and sung so beautifully by a male vocalist. This kid has more than enough talent to give even Ed a run for his money. Extremely talented at songwriting, guitar and piano, something about this young man’s music suggests a future hit love song that will be on every wedding playlist, likely as the first song or the traditional father-daughter dance. Those are the kind of ballads that are timeless, and evoke fond memories and tears of either happiness or sadness for decades to come. If anyone has the potential and talent to create one of those timeless ballads, it’s Kevin Garrett. You won’t have to watch out for this young man, because you will be hearing more from him. Just wait.

Featuring a lead vocalist with a stunning voice filled with passion and clarity, La Force has a sound that is filled with beautiful melodies and instrumental accompaniments. Their eclectic music would be ideal for an funky restaurant or art gallery, a mellow party with candles and soft conversation or just to enjoy while one sits and writes music reviews. They range from the soft and soulful to a more upbeat and unpredictable style. It’s fun to listen to while being relaxing at the same time. La Force would appeal to a wide variety of audiences of many ages. Their name is appropriate, because they ARE a force. They stand out rather than blending with the status quo, which isn’t easy to do nowadays, and they are going places. Definitely worth checking out!

The entertainment and writing communities were saddened to learn of the passing of Gary Webb-Procter aka ‘Gary17’, widely respected musician, critic and Editor of East York Chronicle late last year. Gary’s death didn’t just leave a hole in the hearts of his friends, family, readers and fans, it left a hole in the music scene. Gary took the spotlight off the bands we had already heard of and gave the lesser-known acts a chance to shine. Without his reviews, the Linsmore Tavern wouldn’t be a mecca for up-and-coming musicians, and we would never have heard of or from some incredible talent. The talent of the future deserves the same recognition that their predecessors gained from Gary’s pieces. Reviewing live music isn’t easy nowadays, but as vaccination rollouts continue, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We are proud to offer our services. These are big shoes to fill, but we hope we can honour Gary’s memory by doing it justice.

Precious Love by Chris Birkett
Chris Birkett is a multi-talented, award winning producer, singer/songwriter, composer and sound engineer. His music collaborations with A-list international artists like Sinead O’Connor, Alison Moyet, Dexys Midnight Runners, Talking Heads, The Pogues, Bob Geldof, Quincy Jones, Mel Brooks and Steve Earle have sold over 100 million records and earned four Canadian Junos, a Grammy, a Polaris Music Prize and three international AMPEX Golden Reel Awards for excellence in the music business.
Precious Love is about how positive feelings can grow, and how love can transform people, for people are precious, and relationships are the foundation of humanity. Written and performed by Chris Birkett the song features some of Toronto’s finest musicians, Bill King on keyboards, Gene Hardy playing sax, Paul DeLong on drums, and background vocals by Taylor Abrahamse. The video is created by Joan Prowse.
Chris is no stranger to Canadian music, having co-produced five award winning albums for the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie, including her comeback album “Coincidence and Likely Stories” (1992) and the Juno winning “Running for the Drum” (2009).
His career began as a guitarist, playing in London clubs before touring with Memphis artists Rufus Thomas, Ann Peebles and King Floyd. At 23, Chris was performing with the pop group Love Affair, whose song “Everlasting Love” ruled the UK charts. The following year, he joined the band Omaha Sheriff who had just signed a major recording deal with Tony Visconti, manager of Good Earth Records and producer for David Bowie and the Moody Blues.

With Visconti as a mentor, Chris expanded his career to include producing, engineering and mixing many UK and international hits including Sinead O’Connor’s #1 song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. His London studio was a beehive of activity that was rated #2 in the world on Billboard’s top studio charts.
At the same time, Chris’ own single “Where Do We Go From Here?” was picked by Ed Bicknell (Dire Straits’ manager) to play alongside U2, Peter Gabriel, Bob Marley, Tears for Fears and Queen on Polygram’s “One Voice One Love” album.
In 1993, Chris left the UK for France and built a recording studio inside his chateau near Bordeaux. There he produced albums with the Buena Vista Social Club and other world-class musicians, including Etran Finatawa, whose debut album was nominated for a 2006 BBC Radio best world music award. He then moved his studio to Paris, where he released his second album, “Freedom” and received growing acclaim for his work with world musicians like Algerian sensation Ali Amran.

In 2012, Chris moved to Canada, opened a recording studio in Toronto and finished work on his third album “Be Creative” featuring performances from many talented Canadian artists including Glen Milchem (Blue Rodeo) and Rick Emmett (Triumph). Now a Canadian citizen, Chris’ credits include co-producer of Buffy Sainte-Marie’s Polaris and Juno award winning album “Power in the Blood” (2016) and the recent Juno winner, Medicine Songs (2017), both for True North Records. In 2019 he released 11:11, his fourth album under the band name The Free Spirits.
Chris is currently creating new recordings for a range of talented Canadian and European musicians and is immersed in his own upcoming albums: Songs from the Kauai Hotel Room and a collection of fun-loving songs with his new collective, The Happy Campers. In February 2021, he released the single Precious Love for his documentary filmmaker wife Joan Prowse.
Among his many Precious Loves Chris enjoys performing his original music live at musical venues, clubs and online events.

Festival d’été de Québec Pop-Up FEQ Toronto
Festival d’été de Québec is excited to announce , a new, multi-city live music initiative presented by Sirius XM. Pop-Up FEQ will see surprise live concerts occurring in urban settings in the lead-up to this year’s Festival, taking place July 9 to 19 in Québec City.
The debut Pop-Up FEQ event will take place at Toronto’s Nathan Phillips Square on May 15th at 6pm. The free show will feature surprise artists whose identity will be revealed only at the start of the performance. “We were looking for an original way to draw attention to our event – to get the word out,” explained Luci Tremblay, communications director for Festival d’été de Québec. “Pop-Up FEQ shows will be part of our promotional efforts in Toronto, a market that we’ve been developing over the past few years.” The Toronto event will be presented in collaboration with the Québec City Tourism Bureau and Sirius XM, who will record the performance for broadcast on its network at a later date.
Fans are encouraged to watch Festival d’été de Québec’s social media networks for hints and clues on the time, location – and possibly even the stars– of future Pop-Up FEQ events. An official hashtag has also been created for the series – #PopUpFEQ – and attendees are encouraged to share their experiences at the events on their own social networks. Following the Toronto date, Pop-Up FEQ will move to Québec City, where similar surprise performances will be unveiled in the coming months as well as during the Festival itself.
“We’re proud to work with Festival d’été de Québec in promoting the cultural vitality in the Québec City area. The pop-up concerts are a tantalizing preview of the many shows and cultural events on offer this summer at one of North America’s most unique destinations,” added André Roy, director of the Québec City Tourism Bureau.
Festival d’été de Québec celebrates its 48th anniversary in 2015 with performances by The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Nickelback, Keith Urban, Iggy Azalea – and many more – at Québec City’s historic Plains of Abraham.

Ladystache a hilariously odd yet sketch comedy troupe at The Lot 100. Walking in to the venue I was confronted with two girls on stage walking around trying to figure out what was stuck up one of their arse. i was intrigued to see what it was about so and before I knew it they had changed to a puppet skit. Behind closed chairs pop up to male puppets both as wonky looking as the other and we have some nice funky dance music to accompany what turned into a the one puppet performing oral sex on the other! it was right out of left felid but super funny! Speaking with the girls after the show they were very calm and very approachable. Allison Hogg and Steph Tolev(both 27)are from Collingwood and Toronto they met in college and started doing improve together . They originally were a group of 4 but 2 fell out and now they are the perfect two!
The Hussy’s
The next stop we made was at a Little bar/club on dundas w at Unlovable a very small but kinky bar where the band and customers mingle side by side. The Hussy’s came on and were very confronting, very loud lots of grit! Wow very powerful and unforgiving just the way they like to be. You can feel the passion inside them ,you can see it . At one point I thought the drummer woman was tired or messed up she was going so hard so fast for so long; but she got right back on it just like a jack hammer! loved it ! They make loud n shrill thunderstruck sound -definitely could fill a stadium with their sound-easy. I had to leave to catch my ears running away from me !
The Nils
I dropped in briefly to The Bovine to catch a glimpse of The Nils again a very raunchy loud true grit kinda rockin band. The singer Phil Gravedigge the guitar player WAS VERY NICE and approachable. their sound was very loud and semi fast very danceable. The Nils were formed back in the 80’s by Aalex Soria and brother Carlos, both from Montreal were name checked by bands like Meat Puppets, Super Chunk and Jawbox. They performed extensively in the 80’s releasing 2 ep’s and a single album before they broke up due to Alex’s passing in 2004 ; but did not stop them from reforming for their critically acclaimed album The Title is the Secret Song .
The Sadies
I stopped to see The Sadies at the Horseshoe a very welcomed band by this venue unfortunately never got to see them perform this time due to false information read. Although I did get to speak with a couple of the members in the back after their show. The drummer Mike Belitsky is from Boston originly but lives in Toronto, Andre Williams is from Chicago he is not a permanent member of the band, Travis Good plays Vocal, guitar and fiddle and Dallas Good is vocals and guitar lives in Peterborough but is originly from Richmond Hill., Sean Dean the bass player is also living in Toronto, all very grungy/swanky musicians. Always great dancing music! Mike played the drummer has played for about 30 yrs
Bass drum of Death
I loved this band saw them a great venue The Wrong Bar so loud and heavy very unapologetic damn rights! This band had 2 guitar players and no base player . John Barrett said he writes and composes most of the songs and he doesn’t like the bass . He used to just compose his own music alone and thump his base drum while playing the guitar .They are from Oxford, Mississippi. Colin is the wicked loud Drum player who doesn’t have ot think how he will lose excess water retention. They are touring through Australia in 2012.
Dearly Beloved
My last band to see walking into the Velvet Underground was Dearly Beloved fronted by a cute and raunchy woman Niva Chow tapping her feet and slapping her tamborine and what an awesome voice .they came together in 2006 formed by Robb Higgins a singer/song writer, producer, radio show host. He never had plans for to be a commercialized band.

The next stop was the Cadillac Lounge to take in a Canadian band, Unwed Mothers, whose name was neat and resonated with me as an unwed mother myself. The lead singer, Julie Adams,a petite woman with long hair told the crowd that she was here in the big city for the very first time. If she was finding the hustle and bustle of Toronto overwhelming it didn’t show in her performance at all. When she opened her mouth to sing, I was impressed by the power behind a voice belonging to such a small person- I always seem to find it hard to anticipate a large voice from a small person even though I have been proven wrong time and time again. Her voice was bluesy and, listening to her, Bonnie Raitt came to mind. The volume on the mic could have been louder, as I found it difficult to decipher the lyrics most of the time. The band, especially the frontwoman, were already quite the crowd favorite for newcomers to the city. I don’t know many people who can afford to fly across the country for a music festival, so either their online presence and marketing are incredible, or the locals quickly welcomed the band with open arms. Julie is quite pretty, which never hurts in the entertainment industry, and when she commented on being parched about five guys jumped to the rescue. Three of them gave up, but she made a point of having a sip from both of the beers in front of her, which I thought was really cute. The petite ‘Unwed Mother’ played rhythm guitar for the first few numbers, but I noticed a keyboard at her side and I was looking forward to seeing when she switched it up. Considering my feeble attempts thus far, it always intrigues me a little to watch someone play an instrument while doing all the singing. When she did switch to the keys, she did so in a rhythm capacity, using her free hand to cup the microphone for a rougher vocal effect. It was a nice change at first, though it made hearing the lyrics virtually impossible, but it hid her voice too much. It made for a modern Janis Joplin sound, in which I could see the attraction and appeal, but it could have been used more sparingly. The fourth number was another original, and very impressive, especially as it was a great opportunity for the songstress to showcase her vocal range and talent. The volume on the mic became far less of an issue when the feedback storm began. For some reason, it suddenly got incredibly loud, and whoever was in charge of sound couldn’t seem to get rid of it. The infamous nails-on-a-chalkboard effect of badly placed feedback became fainter, but never really disappeared. It really was a pity because the song that got cut off when the storm began was really pretty. Some of the earlier numbers were hard enough to scare off the more delicate members of the audience, but I personally enjoyed their overall sound and Julie’s beautiful voice, especially when she sang a few inches away from the mic.

The El Mocambo was ON FIRE when Jordan Klassen hit the Stage!! Literally. They had to evacuate right after the first song. The evacuation went smoothly, and our cities firefighters showed a great response time. It was only a little kitchen fire though, so they checked to make sure it was out and then hopped back into one of the 8 fire engines out front and drove away. The whole thing took less than an hour, but it was exciting to be there to see it, especially with it not being serious and no one getting hurt!

Funeral Suits (Alternative) When this band took the stage, any assumptions about traditional Irish music went right out the window. Their first song confirmed what their punky/rock clothing said, as it was hardcore alternative. Stylistically, they were reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails, or Marilyn Manson, but with a uniqueness to their sound. The inclusion of keyboards added depth, and sometimes melancholy. At the beginning of the third song, some pretty ominous sounds emitted from the keyboard and remained faintly in the background throughout. The barrage of buttons and effects on the mic and keys were well utilized, creating a plethora of crazy-cool noises within and around the main body of music. The bass behind the following song was huge, with blipping techno noises meeting slow Nine Inch Nails style. I could certainly imagine a niche for this sort of thing, but they aren’t the kind of band that would appeal to the masses. The last song were heard was a complete 180 degree spin from those preceding it; far more mainstream, happy, fun and catchy- I found myself hoping it was the one on the free CD sampler.

Friday Night brought us back to the El Mocambo for “Music BC Showcase by 102.7 The Peak and Georgia Straight” (Downstairs), and “Music PEI Presents” (upstairs) We travelled first to the west coast of Canada for Dominique Fricot, and I was pleased to see that both the sound and the size of the crowd had improved dramatically. The song we walked in on was a nice, light alternative number, followed by some great R&B bass lines and guitar licks that drew the audience to the dancefloor. The lead male vocalist/guitarist described the next song as a waltz, so I didn’t have a clue what to expect. It turned out to be a beautiful and touching ballad featuring really nice melodies and vocal harmonies. He had quite the vocal range, and was able to adjust his voice appropriately for each style of music. Part way through the set, the band welcomed two more members carrying stringed instruments- a violin and what looked like a cello with a much narrower body. It’s always been a favourite of mine to hear classical instruments in rock/blues groups. There was so much depth and emotion behind the classical strings, it was almost tangible. I was also impressed with how the sets were laid out. Normally everyone playing up and downstairs are on the same schedule, but one started on the hour and the other started on the half hour. It was a great way to enjoy a good half hour a band without having to skip a beat between that and the music on the other floor. Whoever organized that had the right idea, and the whole festival should be laid out as such. There were years it seemed we were always arriving at a venue to watch a band set up or unplug. It can get frustrating!

Delorentos (Alternative Indie Rock) CMW 2013
Delorentos (Alternative Indie Rock) I couldn’t help but love hearing that distinctive Dublin drawl so close to St. Patricks Day. The music wasn’t traditional, but it was fun and melodic. Though there was a taste of heavier alternative sneaking into the numbers, the music was mellow enough for an older crowd to still enjoy. Their tunes were catchy, both vocally and instrumentally, and pleasing to the ears with lovely harmonies. Each member of the band brought something different, yet equally important to the stage, and the overall sound speaks volumes of the individual talents behind it. As one song ended, it was impossible to know what to expect, but it’s safe to assume you will enjoy whatever it is. Their eclectic styles continue to pleasantly surprise. A wide variety of rhythms appeared throughout the set, many of which had the audience clapping or moving along with the band. The cute Irish boys looked the part, and had the energy and passion us fighting, drinking and partying Irish are known for. The final number, entitled ‘Secrets’ had one of those fun choruses that gets stuck in your head, and you find yourself singing along to a song you are only hearing for the first time.

My trusty photographer and I made our way up the stairs in a journey from one end of the country to the other. My experience thus far with East Coast music has been with bands primarily from Nova Scotia, and as my daughter has PEI blood, I was looking forward to seeing what the music from her daddy’s home would be like. It was great-upbeat, with that “East Coast” feel I have always loved. If this band is any indication, PEI is certainly worthy of their own showcase. It looked like the crowd agreed with me, as they surrounded the stage to bop and weave to the tunes. They were a little heavier than most East Coast music I am familiar with, but they managed to do so without losing the friendly, happy party tone. Sadly, it was too loud upstairs- the room isn’t big enough for that kind of volume, and it made it difficult for me to really appreciate the music

Brock Street Mafia Takes the Road to Canadian Music Week
Over the years, I have found myself focusing on smaller, lesser-known venues in search of the musical hidden-gems of the year. I went a little bigger on the Saturday night of Canadian Music Week this year to check out a new band from Whitby. Brock Street Mafia had their debut CMW performance at likely the most well-known venue in the city after duking it out against other hopeful performers in the second annual “Road to Canadian Music Week”. I always assumed the bands playing the Hard Rock would be those with a year or two of successful festival appearances behind them. This band didn’t have the years behind them, but if they keep doing what they are doing, they will enjoy many years to come. Though they haven’t been together very long, the members of BSM found each other at the perfect time in their lives, ready to create and dedicate themselves to a great band and enjoy the success of their combined talent and love for music. Their first show was on December 1, 2012 at the ATRIA in Oshawa, and already they are quickly becoming a regular feature on the Toronto music scene. Founding members, P$yChloDelic (vocals) and Ryan Denyer (guitar) first joined forces in a previous band that didn’t work out, but they weren’t ready to give up. The two continued writing and jamming while in search of like-minded musicians to add to their sound. It didn’t take long to find Gordie (drums) and Ian Sorenson (bass), at which time P$yChloDelic reconnected with her old friend Kyle Homen (guitar). The rest is a very short history thus far, but it already sounds like these guys (and girl) have been playing together for ages. P$yChloDelic has a great tattoo on her calf, evidence of the rock and roll bursting from her tiny frame, even when she’s sporting stilettos. Her voice and stage presence, however, are anything but small. Her clear but powerful vocals are perfect for the music, and with her charisma and energy, she grabs everyone’s attention and keeps it. The band members lend their own personalities to the writing and performance, keeping each other and the audience on their toes. They are all oozing passion and talent, and obviously love what they are doing together. I actually found myself smiling as the set continued, and audience members who were clearly there to see another act couldn’t help getting into the music of Brock Street Mafia. Their tunes were heavy-in a good way, paving the way for everything from the vocals, melodies and rhythms to stand out and shine. The song November Blue was described as one of their slow songs, and it started out as such, but didn’t stay very slow. The magic though, was that it took on a different, yet equally appealing tone and sound so I didn’t find myself wishing it would go back to the ballad-style. My favorite ballads are by rock bands, and I get annoyed when even Metallica and Guns and Roses pick up the pace during one. In this instance, I wasn’t annoyed at all-I just wanted to hear more. From rock to alternative to punk, the music just got more fun as the set progressed, and the rest of the audience obviously agreed with me. The only complaint I have is that it ended too soon. Brock Street Mafia performed at Sound Academy for “420 Fest”, so i made a point of being there for an encore performance. They weren’t as rushed for time at this show, so we got to hear a little more narration from P$yChloDelic between songs, which just made her that much more entertaining.

I had an issue with the CMW Gig guide regarding a lack of information promoting when this band would actually be playing. I understand that the lineup isn’t always finalized on time, and that there are little surprise appearances here and there, but it puts bands like this one at a disadvantage. The guide listed the band, and the little mini-bio, as well as an appearance earlier in the week at a different venue, but didn’t include their appearance downstairs at the El Mocambo on Thursday night. It was a real pity, because if I had seen the band on Wednesday, I would have loved to see them again before they flew home. The place was almost empty, which could have had something to do with the gig not being listed, and it was a shame because a lot of people would really enjoy this group. The volume was obviously geared toward a packed house, and should have been adjusted accordingly when the sound tech established that the crowd would consist of twenty people rather than two-hundred. Paul and I stayed glued to the front windows (about 60 meters away) and, even there, it was far too loud. The sheer volume was just uncalled for and it caused unnecessary distortion. Had it been adjusted by even 10%, it would have sounded great from the opposite end of the empty bar. Big crowd, or a handful of people, this band put on a great show regardless. They had a clean, modern sound full of enthusiasm and energy. They were really good and clicked as a group. Had I hear the studio version of any one of their songs on a popular radio station, I would have assumed they were as popular and well-known as all the other bands frequenting the mainstream airwaves. I hope they had more of a crowd at their Wednesday gig because they truly deserve a following; that, and a skilled sound-technician! The “ElMo” had been renovated since my last visit and looked a little cleaner and brighter than I remembered. I noticed something funny though- the bathrooms, instead of being labelled “Mens” and “Ladies”, had signs saying “The John” and “The Yoko”. Very creative, I thought, and then I wondered if they had been called that the whole time I had been going there and I was just noticing for the first time.

Harris Institute rated 0% for the third time in the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for Student Loan Default Rates, making it the only college, university or private career college in Canada to achieve this milestone.
The Ministry posts Default Rates for Ontario’s 179 post secondary schools to help students evaluate education choices and advises on their website, “Higher default rates are an indication of greater financial risk”.
COSCAP, one of the largest music industry associations in the Caribbean, is funding two annual scholarships for students to attend Harris Institute in Toronto and the government of Barbados is partially funding HIWI, Harris Institute West Indies, the first satellite campus of a Canadian college in the Caribbean.

2013 Canadian Music Week
After perusing the gig-guide, I decided to begin my 2013 Canadian Music Week festivities at the cozy, yet spacious Drake Underground for “Music From Ireland Presents” to check out a couple of bands from Dublin. The company presenting the music offered a free CD sampler of the bands they work with, which I took and thanked them for enthusiastically. It’s a great way to leave some of their music behind for fans in other parts of the world.

It was the perfect summer afternoon with blue skies and a comfortable 23 degrees celcius as people young and old gathered around the main stage at Kew beach. Anticipation mounted for the first lady of guitar, Liona Boyd, to take the stage. Once again residing in Toronto and with a new album “Return To Canada, With Love” set to be released in the new year, Liona graced the stage just after 3:30pm. Accompanied by fellow classical guitarist and Toronto local Michael Savona , the show started off with a classical composition entitled “ Spirit Of The Canadian North Lands” . This was the first taste of a performance chock full of odes to the great white north. Liona Boyd is a reminder of the phenomenal talent our country has to offer. Liona has performed for royalty, for presidents and prime ministers and has performed with such talents as Yo Yo Ma and Eric Clapton. She has performed on The Tonight Show and received both the order of Canada and the order of Ontario. Her illustrious career has brought her to seven continents, performing for audiences all over the world.
Following a diagnosis of focal dystonia, Liona had to change the way she plays guitar. During this period she developed her singing and song writing abilities which is evident in her current music. She now incorporates many folk elements. Liona has an ethereal presence and her music tells a story, whether she is singing about her own personal history or about a Canadian icon such as Emily Carr. One of the more poignant moments was a beautiful song entitled “Living My Life Alone”. A bittersweet song she dedicated to the single people in the audience, it was a very honest reminiscence of the could have beens in life, with a brief mention of her romance with Pierre Elliot Trudeau at the age of 21. A line from the song goes “Who would have thought at this time I’d still have no place to call home. Who would have thought at this time I’d be living my life alone”. It is apparent that Liona Boyd has put reflection in to the events that have shaped her. She talked a lot about Toronto, the city she now once again calls home. “Toronto, I knew you long ago….Toronto, I’ve missed you so”.
Her new album will include a song called “Canada, My Canada” a song that features Jann Arden and was written with the knowledge that there are not enough national patriotism songs being sung in schools across the country. The performance finished with Liona telling the audience “thank you for bringing me home”. Canada welcomes you back with open arms.
Toronto Jazz 2012 Fest: George Benson
As the sun sets over Nathan Philip square there is a palpable feeling of excitement as people await the Legendary George Benson.The night begins with the opening act Tressa Levassuer who, accompanied by her seven piece band, opened with their song “Where Did I go”. A mixture of jazz-infused pop with a bit of soul, they got the crowd toe-tapping and set the beat for the evening. One of my personal favourites is a song she wrote for her 17-year- old daughter, which included a dialogue about “whatever happened to decency”, a banter between mother and daughter, which I’m sure many mothers could relate with.
When they finished their set, there was a buzz in the air. Amongst the swirl of purple and white lighting there was an excited energy as the crowd awaited the main act, legendary jazz performer and 10 time grammy award winning George Benson. Known for such hits as “Affirmation”, Mr. Benson and his band took the stage and the crowd began to cheer. Still going incredibly strong after over 30 years in the music industry, he opened with their hit song “breezin” and the air became thick with the infectious sound of jazz fusion. Alternating between guitar and vocals and just guitar, the set did not disappoint, and even included some classic scat style. The communication between the band and audience was felt and Mr. Benson said “All over the world this song resonated” before going into “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You” in which the crowd enthusiastically applauded. A favourite included the 1950’s classic hit “Tequila”. A crowd pleaser which was turned in to a classic George Benson style of jazz, it included a guitar solo which was mesmerizing. As one of his last song’s of the night started, a solid disco beat began and the crowd was on its feet as the beat turned in to one of their biggest hits “Give Me The Night”.
This writer wasn’t brave enough to dance, but I was definitely dancing in my seat. It was obvious that George Benson and his 5 piece band were in to all the songs and that resonated with the audience. With the encouragement of the bassist Ron Carter even more people got to their feet and dancing ensued.
After “Give Me The Night” Mr. Benson left the stage but the rest of the band remained. A three set encore commenced with the classic “Since I Fell For You” and ended with an excellent cover of “On Broadway” with an amazing drum solo. Although my own personal favourite “This Masquerade” was not played it was of little consequence. It was a very memorable evening and George Benson has proved he is still relevant in an age of auto tune and simple pop melodies.
